A detailed Renaissance scene by Vittore Carpaccio, depicting the solemn funeral rites of Saint Jerome within a Venetian courtyard setting.
Vittore Carpaccio, a Venetian master of the early Renaissance, produced this scene as part of a cycle depicting the life of Saint Jerome for the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni in Venice. The composition is structured around the solemn funeral rites of the saint, who lies prone in the foreground, surrounded by a gathering of monks. Carpaccio employs a clear, linear perspective that draws the eye across the tiled floor toward the open courtyard beyond.
The background reveals a characteristic Venetian interest in architectural detail and exotic elements. A solitary palm tree stands in the centre of the courtyard, while the surrounding buildings feature the distinct chimneys and loggias common to the period. The artist populates the space with small, anecdotal figures, including a horse and various animals, which add a sense of daily life to the religious subject. The palette is dominated by muted earth tones, soft ochres, and the deep blues of the monks' habits, creating a balanced and harmonious visual field.
Carpaccio is known for his ability to integrate narrative detail with a sense of place. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on monumental figures, he often prioritised the environment and the interaction between the characters and their setting. This work demonstrates his skill in managing complex groups of figures while maintaining a sense of order and quietude. The light is even and diffused, suggesting a calm, overcast day, which contributes to the meditative quality of the scene. The attention to the textures of the robes and the architectural surfaces reflects the technical precision typical of the Venetian school at the turn of the sixteenth century. This print captures the atmospheric depth and the narrative clarity that define Carpaccio's contribution to the development of Venetian painting.
