Description
A striking abstract composition by Betty Parsons, featuring bold red forms set against an expansive, atmospheric blue field.
Betty Parsons, better known for her influential role as a gallerist in mid-century New York, maintained a dedicated practice as a painter throughout her life. Bright Day is a representative example of her later work, where she moved away from the gestural intensity of early Abstract Expressionism toward a more controlled, geometric abstraction. The composition relies on a stark contrast between a dominant, expansive field of blue and sharp, deliberate applications of red. The blue ground is not uniform, but rather composed of varied brushwork that creates a sense of atmospheric depth. Against this, the red forms appear as distinct, almost sculptural elements. These shapes are placed with precision, suggesting a structural logic rather than spontaneous mark-making. The interaction between the two colours creates a tension that defines the space of the canvas. Parsons often drew inspiration from her travels and the natural world, translating these experiences into simplified, non-representational forms. In this work, the application of paint is direct and unadorned. The edges of the red shapes show subtle variations, revealing the physical presence of the artist's hand. By limiting her palette and focusing on the relationship between shape and field, Parsons invites the viewer to engage with the painting as a physical object. The work avoids narrative or symbolic meaning, instead asking for an appreciation of colour, balance, and the interplay of positive and negative space. It is a clear expression of her interest in the formal properties of painting, reflecting a career spent observing and curating the development of modern art.
