A minimalist screenprint from Edward Ruscha's 1970 portfolio, featuring the word 'Brews' in a classic Gothic typeface.
This screenprint is part of the 1970 portfolio titled News, Mews, Pews, Brews, Stews & Dues by Edward Ruscha. The series consists of six prints, each featuring a single word rendered in a distinctive Gothic typeface. Ruscha, a central figure in the American Pop Art movement, often utilised language as a primary subject in his work. By isolating these rhyming monosyllabic words, he strips them of their conventional context, forcing the viewer to engage with the visual form of the letters themselves.
The choice of a traditional black-letter script creates a tension with the mundane, colloquial nature of the words chosen. The word Brews is presented in a soft, golden hue against a neutral background. The texture of the ink application suggests a slight degradation, reminiscent of commercial signage or printed ephemera. This aesthetic choice aligns with Ruscha's broader interest in the vernacular of Los Angeles, where he observed the intersection of high culture and everyday life.
Ruscha's approach to printmaking is precise and methodical. He treats the word as an object, placing it centrally within the frame to command attention. The lack of additional imagery or narrative elements encourages a focus on the interplay between the archaic style of the typography and the contemporary, informal vocabulary. This work demonstrates his ability to transform simple linguistic units into graphic icons. By removing the words from their usual associations, Ruscha invites a reconsideration of how meaning is constructed through visual presentation. The print remains a clear example of his conceptual rigour and his ongoing exploration of the relationship between text and image in modern art.
