A poignant depiction of daily life in Eastwood by South African modernist Gerard Sekoto, capturing a quiet moment of community around a brazier.
Gerard Sekoto, a pioneer of South African modernism, painted this work during his time in Eastwood, a suburb of Pretoria. The composition depicts three boys gathered around a makeshift brazier, a common sight in the townships of the period. Sekoto uses a palette dominated by earthy tones and deep purples, which creates a sense of quiet observation rather than overt political commentary. The smoke rising from the brazier acts as a central element, drawing the eye and providing a soft, diffused light that contrasts with the solid forms of the figures.
Sekoto moved to Johannesburg in 1938 and later to Pretoria, where he began to document the daily lives of black South Africans with a focus on dignity and human connection. His approach to painting during these years shows an awareness of European post-impressionist techniques, yet he applied these methods to the specific social conditions of his home country. The figures are rendered with simplified shapes and clear outlines, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the boys and their environment. The scene captures a fleeting moment of warmth and community, grounded in the reality of the urban periphery.
This work is representative of Sekoto's ability to elevate everyday scenes into subjects of artistic merit. By choosing to depict the ordinary activities of township life, he provided a visual record of a community often ignored by the art institutions of the time. The painting remains a clear example of his technical skill and his commitment to portraying the humanity of his subjects through a lens of empathy and direct observation. The use of light and shadow, particularly the way the smoke obscures parts of the background, adds a layer of atmosphere that defines the mood of the piece.
