A detailed etching by Scottish artist David Deuchar, depicting a rustic figure in a relaxed seated pose, inspired by the Dutch genre tradition.
David Deuchar, a Scottish physician and amateur etcher, produced this work during the late eighteenth century. His practice was heavily influenced by the Dutch masters, particularly the etchings of Adriaen van Ostade. This print captures a solitary figure, a boor, resting in a rustic chair. The subject is depicted in a relaxed, informal posture, with one arm draped over the back of the chair and legs crossed.
The etching technique demonstrates a clear focus on line work to define form and texture. Deuchar employs varied hatching patterns to suggest the coarse fabric of the man's clothing and the weathered wood of the chair. The figure wears a wide-brimmed hat, which casts a shadow over his face, adding a sense of depth to the portrait. The background remains largely unadorned, ensuring the viewer's attention stays fixed on the character study.
Deuchar was known for his collection of etchings after the Dutch and Flemish schools, which he published in 1788. This specific piece reflects the period's interest in genre subjects, which often depicted common people in everyday activities. The composition is balanced, relying on the diagonal lines of the chair and the figure's pose to create a sense of stability. The print is signed in the lower right corner, a common practice for Deuchar's editions. This work provides a glimpse into the eighteenth-century fascination with the rustic aesthetic, translated through the precise medium of etching. It remains a representative example of Deuchar's technical skill and his dedication to the traditions of European printmaking.
