A detailed watercolour study of a rural tavern scene, executed by Hendrik Abraham Klinkhamer after the work of Cornelis Dusart.
This watercolour by Hendrik Abraham Klinkhamer is a meticulous copy after the work of the seventeenth-century Dutch master Cornelis Dusart. The scene depicts a rural tavern, or boerenherberg, a common subject in Dutch Golden Age art that focuses on the daily lives of the peasantry. Klinkhamer demonstrates a high level of technical precision in his handling of the medium, capturing the textures of the thatched roofs, the weathered timber of the tavern structure, and the varied fabrics of the figures' clothing.
In the foreground, a man and a woman sit together, the man holding a glass while the woman rests her hands on a small object. Their expressions and postures suggest a moment of quiet respite amidst the activity of the tavern yard. Behind them, other patrons gather under the shelter of a wooden porch, while a small child walks nearby. The composition is balanced, with the architectural elements providing a clear sense of space and depth. The soft, natural light filters through the trees, casting gentle shadows across the dusty ground.
Klinkhamer, active in the late nineteenth century, often engaged with the traditions of his predecessors. By choosing to replicate a work by Dusart, he aligns himself with the long-standing Dutch interest in genre scenes that celebrate or observe the vernacular life of the countryside. The palette is composed of earthy tones, including ochre, muted blues, and soft reds, which contribute to the authentic, historical atmosphere of the piece. This print offers a clear view into the artistic practices of the nineteenth-century Dutch school, where the study of earlier masters was a standard method for refining one's own draughtsmanship and colour application. The work remains a fine example of the period's appreciation for historical narrative and technical discipline.
