Description
A woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the dramatic rock formations of Bō-no-ura, featuring deep blue tones and a vertical composition.
This woodblock print is part of the series Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces, a collection produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the final years of his career. The composition depicts the coastal scenery of Bō-no-ura in Satsuma Province, characterised by two towering rock formations rising from the sea. Hiroshige employs a vertical format to emphasise the height of these geological features, contrasting their verticality with the horizontal expanse of the water and the distant horizon line. The colour palette relies on the use of Prussian blue, a pigment that became accessible in Japan during the nineteenth century and allowed for the deep, saturated tones seen in the water and sky. The transition from a pale yellow at the horizon to a deeper blue at the top of the print creates a sense of atmospheric depth. Small boats with figures are positioned in the foreground, providing a sense of scale against the massive stone pillars. The inclusion of pine trees on the cliffs and the distant arched rock formation adds specific detail to the scene, reflecting the artist's interest in documenting the geography of Japan. Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the woodblock medium, with clean lines defining the textures of the rocks and the ripples of the sea. The cartouche in the upper right corner provides the series title and location, a standard feature of this print series. Hiroshige captures a moment of calm, focusing on the relationship between human activity and the natural environment. This work remains a representative example of the late Ukiyo-e period, showing the artist's ability to balance decorative elements with a clear sense of place.
