A dynamic abstract composition by Romul Nutiu, featuring a dense, gestural web of blue lines that evoke organic movement through thick, expressive brushwork.
Romul Nutiu, a significant figure in Romanian post-war art, developed a distinct approach to abstraction that prioritised the physical application of paint. In Blue Tree III, the artist employs a dense network of gestural marks to suggest organic forms. The composition relies on the interplay between heavy, saturated blue lines and the lighter, more muted background tones. These lines do not merely represent branches; they function as autonomous elements that traverse the canvas, creating a sense of kinetic energy.
Nutiu often utilised a technique involving thick impasto, where the paint itself gains a sculptural quality. This method allows the viewer to observe the direction and force of the artist's hand. The structure of the work is non-representational, yet the title provides a conceptual anchor, inviting the viewer to interpret the chaotic web of colour as a reimagined natural form. The contrast between the dark, cobalt-heavy foreground and the pale, yellowish ground creates a visual tension that draws the eye across the entire surface.
Throughout his career, Nutiu maintained a focus on the expressive potential of colour and gesture. His work avoids rigid geometric constraints, opting instead for a fluid, spontaneous arrangement. This piece demonstrates his ability to balance chaotic mark-making with a cohesive overall structure. By layering these blue forms, he constructs a visual depth that feels both immediate and expansive. The absence of a traditional horizon line or perspective forces the viewer to engage directly with the surface of the painting, focusing on the rhythm of the brushwork and the interaction of the chosen hues. This print captures the texture and depth of the original oil application, ensuring the energy of the artist's process remains visible.
