A striking Symbolist work by Nabis artist Georges Lacombe, featuring a stylised, rhythmic interpretation of a breaking wave in deep blue and amber tones.
Georges Lacombe, a member of the Nabis group, produced this work during a period of intense experimentation with colour and form. The painting depicts a breaking wave, yet it moves away from naturalistic representation. Instead, Lacombe employs a decorative approach, using flattened planes and stylised shapes to convey the movement of water. The sea is rendered in deep, saturated blues, while the foam is transformed into a series of rhythmic, amber-toned patterns that resemble organic motifs or cellular structures.
This stylistic choice aligns with the Nabis interest in synthesism, where the artist prioritises subjective experience and decorative harmony over the objective recording of a scene. The clouds, suspended in the upper portion of the composition, mirror the colour palette of the foam, creating a visual dialogue between the sky and the sea. The brushwork is deliberate, emphasising the two-dimensional surface of the canvas rather than attempting to create an illusion of depth.
Lacombe spent significant time in Brittany, where the rugged coastline provided a recurring subject for his explorations. This piece reflects his fascination with the elemental forces of nature, filtered through the lens of Symbolist aesthetics. By reducing the wave to its essential graphic components, he invites the viewer to consider the sea as a series of abstract rhythms. The work avoids traditional perspective, opting for a bold, graphic arrangement that anticipates later developments in modern art. It remains a clear example of the Nabis desire to integrate art into the decorative sphere, treating the canvas as a surface for expressive, non-naturalistic colour and line.
