A 1917 watercolour study by Theo Colenbrander, featuring stylised floral forms and handwritten design annotations in a balanced, ornamental composition.
This study, titled Bloemenmarkt, originates from 1917 and demonstrates the distinct approach of Theo Colenbrander to decorative design. Known primarily for his work in ceramics and textiles, Colenbrander often utilised a highly stylised, almost abstract method of rendering natural forms. In this watercolour, the floral subjects are broken down into segmented, interlocking shapes that fill the composition. The artist employs a fluid, calligraphic line to define these sections, which are then filled with a palette of soft, muted tones including ochre, rose, and indigo.
The work functions as a preparatory design, evidenced by the handwritten annotations in the margins. These notes specify colour choices and technical instructions for the final execution, providing a glimpse into the methodical process behind his decorative output. The composition lacks traditional depth, favouring a flat, ornamental arrangement that prioritises the rhythm of the lines and the balance of the colour fields over realistic representation.
Colenbrander was a significant figure in the Dutch decorative arts, and his work often departed from the more rigid conventions of his contemporaries. By reducing the floral elements to their essential geometric components, he created a visual language that feels both organic and structured. This piece captures the transition between his earlier, more fluid Art Nouveau influences and the increasingly abstract tendencies that defined his later career. The presence of the date and the artist's signature in the lower corner confirms its status as a deliberate, finished study for a larger project. This print offers a clear view of the artist's hand, preserving the original ink outlines and the delicate application of watercolour washes that define his unique aesthetic.
