A classic 1913 illustration by John Bauer, depicting a small troll standing before a heavy, iron-bound gate set into a mountain.
John Bauer, a Swedish illustrator, created this work for the anthology Bland tomtar och troll (Among Gnomes and Trolls) in 1913. The image depicts a small, bearded troll standing beside a massive, iron-bound wooden door set directly into the rock face of a mountain. The composition relies on a stark contrast between the heavy, immovable stone and the delicate, atmospheric rendering of the surrounding mist or clouds.
Bauer utilised a muted palette of greys, browns, and soft ochres to evoke the damp, ancient atmosphere of Scandinavian folklore. His technique involves fine ink lines to define the texture of the wood and the troll's features, combined with washes of watercolour that create a sense of depth and mystery. The troll, a recurring figure in Bauer's work, appears small and unassuming against the scale of the mountain gate, which suggests a threshold between the human world and a hidden, subterranean realm.
The framing of the scene, with vertical, root-like structures on either side, draws the eye toward the centre. This specific work demonstrates Bauer's ability to blend naturalistic observation of Swedish forests with the fantastical elements of folk tales. His approach to light and shadow creates a quiet, contemplative mood rather than a dramatic one. The iron hinges on the door are rendered with a focus on their weathered, functional appearance, grounding the mythical subject in a tangible reality. This piece remains one of the most recognisable examples of his contribution to early twentieth-century illustration, reflecting a period when artists sought to capture the spirit of national myths through a distinct, personal visual language.
