A detailed sixteenth-century engraving depicting the Siege of Castel Sant'Angelo, based on a design by Maarten van Heemskerck.
This engraving depicts the Siege of Castel Sant'Angelo, a significant event during the Sack of Rome in 1527. The composition, based on a design by Maarten van Heemskerck, captures the tension of the conflict with the fortress serving as the central architectural anchor. The artist employs precise, controlled lines to define the masonry of the castle, the heavy artillery positioned on the bridge, and the figures of soldiers in the foreground.
Coornhert, a Dutch engraver and humanist, demonstrates technical mastery in his handling of the burin. The scene is organised with a clear sense of depth, drawing the eye from the foreground figures toward the imposing circular structure of the mausoleum of Hadrian. The inclusion of Latin text at the base provides historical context, noting the capture of the city and the plight of Pope Clement VII, who sought refuge within the walls.
Stylistically, the work reflects the influence of Italian Mannerism on Northern European artists of the sixteenth century. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and dynamic poses characteristic of the period. The architectural elements are rendered with a focus on structural clarity, while the surrounding atmosphere is suggested through subtle hatching. This print serves as a record of a major European conflict, filtered through the aesthetic sensibilities of the Dutch Renaissance. The balance between the military narrative and the architectural detail provides a view into how historical events were documented and disseminated through the medium of print during the sixteenth century.
