Description
A potted azalea plant rendered in a simplified, almost blocky style. The composition is divided into distinct colour fields, with the pink azalea blossoms contrasting against the dark green foliage.
Auguste Herbin (1882-1960) was a French painter known for his contributions to Cubism and later, abstract art. His early work showed Impressionist and Fauvist influences, but he soon moved toward a more structured, geometric style. He was a founding member of the Abstraction-Création group in 1931, which promoted non-figurative art. Herbin developed a system he called his 'alphabet plastique', where each letter of the alphabet corresponded to a specific colour and geometric form. This system guided his later compositions. 'Azalées' presents a potted azalea plant rendered in a simplified, almost blocky style. The composition is divided into distinct colour fields, with the pink azalea blossoms contrasting against the dark green foliage. The pot is depicted with vertical lines and geometric patterns, set against a background of yellow and red planes. The brushstrokes are visible, adding texture to the surface. The overall effect is a balance between representation and abstraction, characteristic of Herbin's approach to still life.
