Description
A German Impressionist landscape, 'Autumn Forest' by Max Slevogt captures a woodland scene with loose brushwork and a focus on light and atmosphere.
Max Slevogt (1868-1932) was a German Impressionist painter, known for his atmospheric landscapes and portraits. Slevogt, along with Lovis Corinth and Max Liebermann, belonged to the foremost representatives of German Impressionism. His style is characterised by loose brushwork and a focus on capturing light and atmosphere. He moved away from academic traditions, embracing a more modern approach to painting. 'Autumn Forest' exemplifies Slevogt's approach to the Impressionist style. The painting depicts a woodland scene in autumn, with trees rendered in shades of orange, brown, and green. The composition is structured by the verticality of the slender trees, which reach towards a sky rendered in soft blues and greys. The brushstrokes are visible and expressive, contributing to the painting's sense of movement and light. The overall effect is one of quiet contemplation, capturing the transient beauty of the season.
