A masterful High Renaissance composition by Andrea del Sarto, depicting the Virgin Mary ascending to heaven above the gathered Apostles.
Andrea del Sarto painted this version of the Assumption of the Virgin for the cathedral of Cortona. The composition follows a traditional two-tier structure, separating the celestial realm from the terrestrial. In the upper register, the Virgin Mary ascends amidst a gathering of putti and clouds. Her posture is one of quiet devotion, with hands clasped and eyes directed upward. The lower register depicts the Apostles gathered around the empty tomb. Their reactions vary from astonishment to contemplation, creating a sense of human drama that balances the ethereal nature of the scene above.
Del Sarto employs a sophisticated colour palette, favouring deep reds, ochres, and muted blues. His application of paint demonstrates a mastery of sfumato, a technique that softens the transitions between colours and tones. This approach creates a sense of atmosphere, particularly within the shadowed areas of the tomb and the swirling clouds. The figures are rendered with anatomical precision, reflecting the artist's training in Florence. The drapery folds are handled with particular care, providing volume and weight to the garments worn by the figures.
This work is one of several versions of the subject produced by the artist. It demonstrates his ability to manage complex multi-figure compositions while maintaining clarity and emotional resonance. The lighting is carefully controlled, drawing the viewer's eye from the terrestrial group toward the radiant figure of the Virgin. The painting remains a representative example of the Florentine High Renaissance, showing the transition toward the more expressive qualities that would later define Mannerism. The work is currently held in the collection of the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, where it continues to be studied for its technical execution and compositional balance.
