A serene colour lithograph by Henri Rivière, capturing a quiet coastal scene in Brittany with a focus on graphic simplicity and atmospheric light.
Henri Rivière was a central figure in the French printmaking revival at the end of the nineteenth century. This work belongs to his series 'Aspects of Nature', which demonstrates his fascination with the coastal regions of Brittany. Rivière was deeply influenced by the aesthetic principles of Japanese woodblock prints, particularly the works of Hokusai and Hiroshige. He adopted their use of flat colour planes, bold outlines, and simplified compositions to capture the atmospheric conditions of the French shoreline.
In this scene, two white horses graze in a rocky, windswept field overlooking a calm bay. The composition is structured by the verticality of the pine trees, which frame the distant horizon and create a sense of depth. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted ochres, soft greys, and earthy browns to evoke the specific light of the Breton coast. A small figure of a person, perhaps a local peasant, is visible in the middle distance, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the vast, quiet environment.
Rivière utilised the medium of colour lithography to achieve these subtle tonal gradations. His approach avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the essential forms of the terrain and the movement of the horses' manes in the breeze. The print reflects a period when European artists were re-evaluating their relationship with nature through the lens of Eastern artistic traditions. By stripping away the academic conventions of the time, Rivière produced an image that prioritises mood and graphic clarity. This print is a characteristic example of his ability to synthesise observation with a highly stylised, decorative approach to the natural world, resulting in a balanced and tranquil composition.
