A detailed architectural capriccio by Hubert Robert, featuring the Laocoön sculpture within an imagined classical setting.
Hubert Robert, often referred to as Robert des Ruines, was a French painter who spent over a decade in Rome. This work is a classic example of the capriccio, a genre that combines real and imaginary architectural elements to create a staged, atmospheric scene. The composition features a grand, vaulted stone structure that frames a view of a distant colonnade and obelisk.
Within this setting, Robert places the famous Laocoön group, a Hellenistic sculpture that was a primary object of study for artists during the eighteenth century. The inclusion of this sculpture, alongside sphinxes and fragments of classical masonry, reflects the fascination with antiquity that defined the period. The figures in the foreground, depicted in contemporary dress, provide a sense of scale and human activity, contrasting the permanence of the stone ruins with the fleeting nature of daily life.
Robert employs a delicate ink outline, filled with washes of grey, brown, and muted blue. The light enters from the left, casting soft shadows across the steps and the textured surfaces of the stone. His technique captures the weathered quality of ancient materials, while the architectural arrangement demonstrates his interest in perspective and spatial depth. This piece is characteristic of his ability to synthesise archaeological observation with imaginative design, a hallmark of his career in both Rome and Paris. The work serves as a visual record of the eighteenth-century preoccupation with the grandeur of the past, presented through the lens of a highly skilled draughtsman.
