Description
A striking example of Russian Constructivism, this abstract composition by Lyubov Popova explores the structural relationships between geometric planes and colour.
Lyubov Popova was a central figure in the Russian avant-garde, known for her rigorous approach to form and space. This work belongs to her Architectonic Painting series, a collection of compositions that explore the interaction of geometric planes. Rather than representing objects from the physical world, Popova focuses on the internal logic of the canvas itself. The composition relies on the tension between overlapping shapes. A large, orange-toned rectangular form dominates the centre, anchored by sharper, angular shards of blue, green, and black. These elements create a sense of weight and balance, suggesting a structure that exists independently of traditional perspective. The application of paint is deliberate, with visible brushwork that adds a tactile quality to the flat surfaces. Popova moved away from the representational concerns of her earlier Cubo-Futurist works to embrace a more analytical method. In these paintings, she treats the canvas as a site for construction. The interplay of light and shadow is achieved through colour transitions rather than modelling, giving the work a sense of depth that feels both physical and intellectual. By stripping away narrative content, she directs the viewer to consider the relationships between colour, line, and mass. This approach reflects the broader shift in early twentieth-century art towards non-objective forms, where the painting functions as an autonomous object. Her work remains a clear example of the transition from painterly abstraction to the functionalist ideals of the later Constructivist movement, where art was increasingly viewed as a form of social and industrial design.
