A monochrome woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicting a scene of moxibustion therapy within an Edo-period interior.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicts a domestic scene within the Yoshiwara pleasure district. The composition focuses on three figures engaged in a medical or ritualistic practice. An oiran, or high-ranking courtesan, administers moxibustion, a traditional therapy involving the burning of mugwort on the skin, to the bared back of a seated woman. A third figure sits to the left, observing the procedure while holding small items. The artist employs a clean, linear style characteristic of the mid-Edo period, prioritising clarity of form over complex shading or perspective.
The figures wear elaborate kimono adorned with floral and geometric patterns, which demonstrate the artist's attention to contemporary fashion. The background features a folding screen with a painted landscape, providing a sense of interior space without overwhelming the foreground action. Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of ukiyo-e, known for his innovations in print format and his ability to capture the daily lives of the urban population. His work often documented the customs of the pleasure quarters, offering a glimpse into the social dynamics of the era. The print is executed in sumizuri-e, a monochrome style that relies on the contrast between black ink and paper. This approach directs the viewer's attention to the gestures and interactions of the subjects, rather than decorative colour. The balanced arrangement of the figures across the horizontal plane creates a sense of order, typical of the period's aesthetic preferences. This piece provides a record of historical health practices and the social environment of eighteenth-century Japan.
