A refined ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicting a courtesan playing the shamisen for an attentive listener.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu captures a quiet, intimate moment within the pleasure quarters of Edo-period Japan. The composition features an oiran, a high-ranking courtesan, seated while playing the shamisen, a three-stringed musical instrument. Beside her, a young man kneels, his posture suggesting deep absorption in the performance. The artist employs a minimalist aesthetic, relying on clean, fluid lines to define the figures and their elaborate kimono patterns.
Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of ukiyo-e, known for his innovations in print technology and his ability to convey narrative through simple, elegant forms. This work is a benizuri-e, or a print that uses a limited colour palette, though the primary focus remains on the calligraphic quality of the ink lines. The background is left largely empty, which directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between the two subjects. The inclusion of a small tea set in the upper left corner provides a sense of place, grounding the scene in the daily life of the urban elite.
The artist’s mastery of line weight creates a sense of volume and movement within the garments, despite the overall flatness of the image. The oiran’s kimono is decorated with subtle floral motifs, which contrast with the more restrained attire of the man. This print reflects the cultural fascination with the floating world, where music, fashion, and social performance were central themes. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Masanobu allows the viewer to focus on the emotional connection between the figures. The work remains a clear example of the mid-eighteenth-century style, where the focus shifted towards more sophisticated figure studies and refined compositions.
