A 1919 oil painting by Moïse Kisling depicting a circus performer in a moment of repose, characterised by bold colour contrasts and simplified forms.
Moïse Kisling, a central figure of the École de Paris, painted this work in 1919. The composition features a performer resting upon a bright red mat, set against a warm, ochre-toned background. The figure is rendered with the stylised, melancholic precision that defines much of Kisling's output during this period. Her posture is relaxed, yet the stark contrast between the crimson attire and the surrounding amber space creates a sense of isolation.
Kisling moved to Paris from Kraków in 1910, eventually settling in Montparnasse. His work often reflects the influence of his contemporaries, including Amedeo Modigliani, with whom he shared a studio. This painting demonstrates his interest in the human form, characterised by smooth, simplified volumes and a deliberate approach to colour. The acrobat's features are mask-like, with dark, bobbed hair framing a pale face, a common motif in his portraiture. The application of paint is controlled, avoiding excessive texture to maintain a clean, graphic quality that draws the eye directly to the subject.
By 1919, Kisling had established his reputation as a painter of the bohemian life in Paris. His subjects frequently included models, circus performers, and fellow artists. This piece captures a quiet moment of repose, stripped of the typical spectacle associated with the circus. The focus remains on the physical presence of the sitter, whose form is anchored by the bold, rectangular shape of the mat. The work avoids complex narrative, instead presenting a study of form and colour balance. It remains a representative example of how Kisling synthesised modernist influences with a personal, disciplined aesthetic during the post-war years in France.
