This work by Jonas Zeuner, dated 1780, is a fine example of the reverse painting on glass technique for which the artist is known. Zeuner, a German-born artist who settled in Amsterdam, specialised in creating these delicate compositions, often incorporating topographical views or allegorical scenes. The process involves painting on the reverse side of a glass sheet, requiring the artist to work in reverse order, applying details and foreground elements before the background.

The composition presents a classical allegory, likely commissioned to celebrate a commercial or civic enterprise. A central female figure sits upon a throne, holding a scroll, while a companion stands beside her holding a bundle of rods. To the right, a figure resembling Mercury rests upon a scroll, suggesting trade and communication. In the foreground, two putti examine a grid or map, reinforcing themes of planning and industry. The background features a calm harbour with ships, linking the scene to the maritime prosperity of the Dutch Republic.

The inclusion of a cartouche at the base, featuring Dutch text and the signatures of both Zeuner and J.F. Delsing, indicates the collaborative nature of such decorative commissions. The style reflects the Neoclassical interest in classical iconography, adapted for the refined tastes of the eighteenth-century Dutch merchant class.
