Description

A 1680 etching by Cesare Massimiliano Gini after a design by Parmigianino, depicting a classical allegorical figure with architectural tools.

This etching by Cesare Massimiliano Gini, dated 1680, reproduces a composition by the Mannerist painter Francesco Mazzola, known as Parmigianino. The print depicts a seated male figure, draped in classical robes, positioned within an architectural setting. The figure gestures towards an arched structure, while a pair of compasses rests on the ledge beside him, suggesting an association with geometry, architecture, or the liberal arts. The composition reflects the influence of Parmigianino’s elongated forms and fluid drapery, characteristics that defined his contribution to the Italian Renaissance. Gini’s technique employs fine, hatched lines to define the musculature of the figure and the folds of the fabric. The cross-hatching creates depth and volume, typical of seventeenth-century printmaking practices that sought to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into monochrome ink. The inscription at the base, 'Franciscus Mazzola del' and 'CC. M. G. scul', identifies the original draughtsman and the printmaker respectively. The Latin text below indicates that the original plate was held by the Venetian publisher Giovanni Antonio Armano. This work provides insight into the practice of reproductive printmaking, where artists disseminated the styles of earlier masters to a wider audience. The inclusion of the compasses adds a layer of intellectual symbolism, common in allegorical works of the period. The print is presented with a clear, structured composition, focusing on the central figure while maintaining a balance between the human form and the surrounding architectural elements. The monochromatic palette emphasises the precision of the line work, allowing the viewer to appreciate the technical skill involved in capturing the essence of Parmigianino’s original design through the medium of etching.
