A stark, expressive lithograph by Walter Gramatté depicting a scene from Nikolai Gogol's The Overcoat, capturing the vulnerability of the protagonist.
This lithograph by Walter Gramatté depicts a scene from Nikolai Gogol's short story, The Overcoat. The work captures the protagonist, Akaki Akakievich, in a moment of quiet desperation as he presents his worn garment to the tailor. Gramatté employs the stark contrast of black ink against the paper to create a sense of psychological weight. The lighting is directional, casting deep shadows that obscure parts of the figures and the room, which serves to focus the viewer on the interaction between the two men.
Gramatté was a significant figure within the German Expressionist movement. His work often explored themes of human suffering, isolation, and the existential struggles of the individual. In this print, the heavy, gestural marks and the distortion of form are characteristic of his approach to printmaking. He avoids smooth transitions, opting instead for a rough, textured application of ink that conveys the grit of the narrative. The composition is tight, trapping the figures within a dark, claustrophobic space that mirrors the social conditions described in Gogol's text.
The print demonstrates the artist's ability to translate literary themes into visual form without relying on literal representation. By focusing on the physical act of showing the damaged coat, Gramatté communicates the vulnerability of the character. The lack of detail in the background forces the viewer to engage with the emotional state of the subjects. This piece is a clear example of the Expressionist interest in the subjective experience of reality, where the artist uses form and shadow to externalise internal states of mind. It remains a compelling study of character and narrative tension, rendered through the medium of lithography.
