The lower portion of the painting features dark, undulating waves that suggest a sense of movement and depth. Above this, the horizon line is dominated by a procession of silhouettes, including an elephant and other indistinct figures, moving towards the light. These shapes are set against a pale, golden sky that radiates from the right, where the sun is partially visible.
