The image originates from the play Otokoyama Oedo no Ishizue, performed at the Kiri-za theatre in Edo during the fifth month of 1794. Sharaku is recognised for his unconventional approach to actor portraiture, often exaggerating facial features to capture the intensity of a performance rather than a flattering likeness.
