A refined eighteenth-century pastel portrait by Rosalba Carriera, depicting Caterina Sagredo Barbarigo with characteristic grace and soft luminosity.
Rosalba Carriera was a central figure in the development of pastel as a primary medium for portraiture during the eighteenth century. This work depicts Caterina Sagredo Barbarigo, a member of the Venetian aristocracy. Carriera achieved a soft, atmospheric quality through the application of pastel, allowing for subtle transitions in skin tone and the delicate rendering of fabric textures. The subject wears a dark hat and a blue garment, accented by a red ribbon and multiple strands of pearls. Her expression is composed, reflecting the refined aesthetic of the Venetian Rococo period.
Carriera gained international recognition for her ability to capture the likeness and personality of her sitters with speed and precision. Her technique involved the use of fine strokes and blending, which created a luminous surface. Unlike oil painting, which requires a longer drying time and more rigid layering, pastel allowed Carriera to work with a sense of immediacy. This portrait demonstrates her mastery of light and shadow, particularly in the way the pearls catch the illumination against the darker tones of the clothing and the background. The composition is intimate, focusing on the subject's face and upper torso, which was a common format for her commissioned works. By the time this piece was created, Carriera had already established a reputation across Europe, having spent time in Paris and Vienna, where her work influenced many contemporary artists. Her contribution to the medium of pastel elevated it from a tool for preparatory sketches to a respected form of finished portraiture. This print preserves the texture of the original pastel, offering a clear view of the artist's handling of the medium and her approach to eighteenth-century portraiture.
