A fine engraving by Vincenzo Vangelisti after Raphael, depicting the Madonna and Child in a tender, classical composition.
This engraving by Vincenzo Vangelisti, titled Le Premier Devoir des Mères, reproduces a composition by the High Renaissance master Raphael. Vangelisti, an Italian engraver active in the eighteenth century, demonstrates technical precision in his translation of the original painting into the medium of copperplate engraving. The work depicts the Madonna and Child in a tender, domestic moment, focusing on the act of nursing. The figures are rendered with soft modelling, contrasting with the structured, linear quality of the surrounding architectural frame.
The composition follows the conventions of Raphael's devotional works, where the figures occupy a shallow space against a backdrop of foliage and distant hills. Vangelisti employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the texture of the fabric, the softness of the infant's skin, and the weight of the cushion. The print includes the original French inscription, identifying the source as a painting held in the Palais Royal collection at the time of production. This type of reproductive print was common in the eighteenth century, allowing collectors to own copies of works by masters that were otherwise inaccessible.
As a piece of historical printmaking, this work reflects the period's interest in disseminating classical and Renaissance imagery. The attention to detail in the drapery and the gentle expression of the Madonna show the engraver's ability to capture the emotional tone of the original painting. The print is presented with a decorative border, which mimics the appearance of a physical frame, a common stylistic choice for engravings of this era. This fine art print offers a clear view of the engraver's skill in managing light and shadow through line work alone, providing a monochromatic interpretation of a classic subject.
