Description
A 1993 abstract oil painting by Zao Wou-Ki, featuring atmospheric blue tones and gestural marks that evoke the movement of light and space.
Zao Wou-Ki, a central figure in the development of Lyrical Abstraction, created this work in 1993. The composition demonstrates his mastery of space and light, blending Eastern calligraphic traditions with Western oil painting techniques. The canvas is dominated by deep, atmospheric blues that recede into the background, creating a sense of vast, ethereal depth. Within this blue field, lighter, almost translucent tones emerge, suggesting movement and the shifting nature of light. The application of paint varies from smooth, thin washes to more aggressive, textured marks that anchor the lower portion of the frame. These darker, gestural strokes provide a counterpoint to the expansive, airy centre of the work. Zao Wou-Ki moved to Paris in 1948, where he began to synthesise the ink-wash traditions of his Chinese heritage with the modernist movements of Europe. His work often avoids explicit representation, opting instead to evoke the feeling of natural phenomena, such as water, air, or light. This piece is characteristic of his later period, where the balance between control and spontaneity becomes increasingly refined. The viewer is invited to engage with the surface of the painting, observing how the layers of colour interact and how the negative space functions as an active element of the composition. The absence of a fixed horizon line allows the eye to wander across the canvas, experiencing the work as a continuous, unfolding event rather than a static image.
