Vincenzio Vangelisti

Vincenzio Vangelisti moved to Paris to study under Jean-Georges Wille. This period of French instruction defined his technical style. In 1776, Empress Maria Theresa chose him to lead the new School of Engraving at the Brera Academy in Milan. He was the first person to hold this position. His career concluded with his death in 1798.

Biography

Vangelisti used the burin to create his plates. This tool demands great control to produce clean, sharp lines. He often reproduced paintings by other artists, translating their brushwork into the language of copperplate engraving. His portrait of Marshall Richelieu, Duke and Peer of France, displays this skill. The work uses varying line weights to suggest the sheen of silk and the hardness of armour.

These prints appeal to those who appreciate the discipline of traditional draughtsmanship. The black-and-white compositions offer a restrained aesthetic that complements modern decor. Each piece is a factual record of eighteenth-century portraiture and religious art. Collectors choose his work for its historical accuracy and its clear, Neoclassical execution.
