Theodor Werner

Theodor Werner lived in Paris for five years during the 1930s. He joined the Abstraction-Creation group and studied the work of contemporary French painters. When he returned to Germany, the authorities banned his work. He spent the war years working in isolation in Potsdam. An air raid in 1945 destroyed almost all of his previous work. He had to rebuild his entire portfolio from a few remaining sketches.

Biography

His style moved away from representing physical objects. He preferred to paint the energy and forces behind them. Werner used circles and rhythmic lines to create movement. He chose specific colour palettes to define different planes of space. His compositions are often sparse. This clarity allows the viewer to focus on the movement of the shapes across the surface. He was a founding member of the Zen 49 group in Munich.

Modern collectors appreciate the architectural quality of his work. The prints provide a calm atmosphere for a room. The geometric nature of his work complements contemporary furniture and minimalist design. His history of working through suppression adds a layer of historical interest to his work. These prints represent the recovery of German modernism after a period of forced silence.
