Salomon de Bray

Salomon de Bray was a professional architect and poet. He also maintained a career as a painter. In 1631, he published Architectura Moderna, a volume that preserved the technical designs of Hendrick de Keyser for future generations. This interest in structure defined his career in Haarlem. He played a leading role in reorganising the Guild of Saint Luke to separate artists from craftsmen, which helped elevate the social standing of painters in the Netherlands. He was also involved in the early designs for the Huis ten Bosch palace in The Hague.

Biography

His style is a primary example of Dutch Classicism. He moved away from the heavy shadows of the Caravaggisti to embrace clear light and stable compositions. Many of his works, including his depictions of the Queen of Sheba, feature figures with a distinct physical weight. He used a restrained colour palette that emphasised form over decorative detail. His paintings often resemble staged theatrical scenes where every element has a specific and logical purpose.

Collectors today appreciate the quiet authority in his work. The clean lines and muted tones of his portraits integrate well with modern decor. His focus on balance makes his prints suitable for rooms that require a calm atmosphere. By choosing a De Bray print, a buyer acquires a piece of the Dutch Golden Age that avoids the visual clutter of more traditional Baroque art. His work remains a sophisticated choice for those who value clarity and historical depth.
