Romeyn de Hooghe

Romeyn de Hooghe was a rare artist of the Dutch Golden Age who held a title of nobility. The Polish king admitted him to the nobility in 1673. This status allowed him to move within the highest social circles of the Dutch Republic. He was present to record the signing of the Treaty of Breda in 1667. His output included etchings and paintings. He even designed coins.

These etchings avoid the coldness of standard architectural plans. They depict active congregations. He included specific fashions and religious rituals in his compositions. He frequently added his own poems to his plates in several languages.

Collectors today appreciate the precision of his handiwork. He captured the fine grades of facial expression and the weight of fabrics. His prints offer a clear view into the social history of the Netherlands. They provide a sense of place and atmosphere. These etchings are excellent choices for those seeking historical depth in their decor.
