Otto Christopher von der Howen

Otto Christopher von der Howen was a Norwegian high-ranking military officer who spent much of his life in the Dutch army. He reached the rank of General and served during the Napoleonic Wars. Unlike professional studio artists, he produced many of his drawings and watercolours while on active duty or during his travels across Europe. His dual life as a soldier and an artist allowed him to document scenes from a perspective of disciplined observation.

Biography

His work often focuses on the practicalities of 19th-century life, such as transport and animals. In "Drie trekpaarden in het water", he uses a precise style to record the physical presence of working horses. He avoided the dramatic tropes of Romanticism. Instead, he favoured a clear, topographical approach that reflected his military training in cartography and sketching. His compositions are often calm and direct.

Modern collectors value Howen for his unpretentious view of history. His prints offer a window into a world where horses were the primary source of power. The technical accuracy of his work makes it suitable for traditional or minimalist interiors. Because he was an amateur in the original sense of the word, his art feels personal and observational. It captures quiet moments between the major events of his military career.
