Moritz Kellerhoven
Kellerhoven was a founding professor at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and a court painter to the Elector of Bavaria. Despite his official status, he spent much of his time perfecting the lighting techniques of the Dutch Golden Age. This interest led him to create works like Rembrandt's Father and A Jewish Merchant, which were direct homages to the 17th-century master. He often used local models to recreate these historical styles.

His style focuses on the texture of fabrics and the play of light on aged skin. In Old Woman with Her Beads and Man with Fur Coat and Hat, he captures the tactile quality of clothing and accessories. Kellerhoven avoided the stiff formality of typical 18th-century court portraiture. He preferred the tronie tradition, focusing on the character and expression of the subject instead of social status.
Modern collectors value these prints for their moody atmosphere and domestic scale. The dark backgrounds and sharp lighting create a sense of quiet focus in a room. These portraits do not require a grand gallery setting to look effective. They offer the aesthetic of an Old Master painting with the clarity of a late 18th-century hand.
