Master of Frankfurt

Despite his name, the Master of Frankfurt never lived in the German city. He operated a large workshop in Antwerp during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Scholars usually identify him as Hendrik van Wueluwe, who served as dean of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke six times. He earned his pseudonym because his most famous commissions were sent to Frankfurt patrons. This geographical confusion often masks his role as a central figure in the Flemish artistic market.

Biography

His work combines traditional Netherlandish techniques with a commercial sensibility. He frequently borrowed compositions from earlier masters like Rogier van der Weyden. This practice allowed his workshop to produce high-quality panels for a growing merchant class. His style features clear, balanced arrangements and an interest in secular subjects, including the archers' festivals of his home city. He famously included a portrait of himself and his wife in a 1496 panel.

Modern collectors value these works for their clarity and domestic scale. Pieces like the Triptych with the Virgin and Child accompanied by Saint Barbara illustrate private devotional practices. His paintings avoid the excessive ornamentation of his contemporaries. Instead, they offer a calm, orderly aesthetic that suits contemporary interiors. The combination of historical weight and visual accessibility makes his prints a popular choice for those seeking classical European art.
