Martiros Saryan
Martiros Saryan grew up in a rural colony near the Don River and did not visit Armenia until he was twenty-one. This initial encounter with the mountains and sunlight of his ancestral home redefined his understanding of optics. He trained at the Moscow School of Painting under Valentin Serov. Saryan often noted that the intensity of the Caucasian sun required a new way of seeing that traditional Russian techniques could not provide.
Biography
His approach involved the use of flat colour planes and heavy outlines. He abandoned the muted tones of his academic training in favour of a bright palette. Saryan found inspiration in the two-dimensional nature of Armenian medieval manuscripts. He applied these techniques to scenes from his travels in Egypt and Turkey. His paintings of camels and street markets use simple shapes to convey heat and space.
These works appeal to current collectors because of their graphic strength. The compositions are uncluttered and direct. Saryan's ability to simplify a scene into its essential elements makes his art suitable for modern interiors. The prints offer a sense of warmth through their use of primary colours.
