Lucas Vorsterman II

Lucas Vorsterman II often completed projects that his father, Lucas Vorsterman the Elder, began but never finished. This included recording the details of Hans Holbein the Younger’s lost paintings for the Hanseatic merchants in London. While the elder Vorsterman made the initial copies, the younger artist produced the final engravings. These prints are now the primary evidence for the original colour schemes and compositions of those destroyed murals.

Biography

Lucas Vorsterman II was a Flemish copperplate engraver who prioritised technical clarity. His work, such as the Portrait of Jacobus Strada, demonstrates a mastery of the burin. He used groups of parallel lines to build form and shadow. This method allowed him to translate the textures of oil paintings into a graphic medium. He adhered to the traditions of the Antwerp school and avoided the softer style of his contemporaries.

Modern collectors value these prints for their sharp lines and historical weight. The engravings offer a link to the private collections of the seventeenth-century nobility, including the Earl of Arundel. Their monochrome palette provides a clean look that fits well in contemporary rooms. These works are more than mere copies; they are precise records of European art history.
