Jules Jacquemart
Jules Jacquemart was the son of Albert Jacquemart, a collector and historian of ceramics. While many artists of his era focused on portraits or outdoor scenes, Jules dedicated much of his career to the exact reproduction of objects. He provided the illustrations for his father's books, including History of the Ceramic Art. His ability to translate the surface of a porcelain vase or a metal lamp into a monochrome etching was considered unmatched in nineteenth-century France.
Biography
His technique relied on a precise use of the etching needle. He captured the specific qualities of different glazes, from the glassy surface of a Chinese vase to the matte finish of Italian majolica. In works like History of the Ceramic Art: Italy: Renaissance: Majolica of Urbino: Hunting Bottle, he used fine lines to suggest volume and light. He avoided heavy outlines. Instead, he allowed the contrast between the paper and the ink to define the shape of the object.
Collectors today value these prints for their clean lines and historical accuracy. They function as both art and record. The plates from the History of the Ceramic Art series, such as the Votice Lamp from a Mosque or the Dresden Ewer in Relief, provide a curated look for modern interiors.
