John Smith

John Smith earned his nickname "Warwick" because the Earl of Warwick funded his travels to Italy. While living in Rome between 1776 and 1781, he developed a method of painting directly from nature. This practice was uncommon during the 18th century. He worked alongside other artists like William Pars and Francis Towne to record the ruins and coastlines of the Mediterranean. He often used a limited palette of grey and blue washes before adding local colours.

Biography

His technique relied on the careful layering of transparent watercolour washes. Smith avoided the use of opaque body colour. He preferred to build depth through tonal shifts. His works, including views of the Bay of Naples and the Roman Campagna, focus on topographical accuracy. These compositions capture the specific quality of light found in the Italian countryside. He was a member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours and contributed to their early exhibitions.

Collectors today appreciate the restraint found in his work. The muted colour palettes and clear compositions fit well within modern living spaces. His prints provide a historical perspective without the heavy ornamentation of later periods. The balanced compositions maintain a sense of order. These pieces work particularly well in rooms with natural light.
