Jérôme David

Jérôme David spent a significant portion of his career in Rome during the middle of the seventeenth century. He worked alongside his brother, Jean David, and became a specialist in the reproduction of contemporary Italian and French paintings. His time in Italy allowed him to study the works of masters firsthand. This experience shaped his technical ability to translate oil paintings into the medium of black-and-white print.

Biography

He developed a technique that relied on a precise combination of etching and engraving. He used the etching needle to establish light outlines before finishing the plate with a burin for sharp detail. This method provided his engravings with a clarity that many of his contemporaries lacked. He often collaborated with Simon Vouet and Claude Vignon to produce portraits and religious scenes. His work is defined by its clean lines and the systematic use of cross-hatching to create depth.

Modern collectors value David for his technical discipline and his role in the history of French printmaking. His engravings offer a window into the visual culture of the Baroque era without the distractions of colour. These engravings suit contemporary interiors that favour monochrome palettes or classical themes. They provide a sense of historical weight through their formal compositions and sharp execution.
