Inoue Yasuji
Inoue Yasuji died at the age of twenty-five. Despite his short career, he became the primary successor to Kobayashi Kiyochika. He adopted the name Yasuji after his teacher. He often worked under the pseudonym Tankei. His prints captured the rapid Westernisation of Tokyo during the Meiji period. He documented the transition from traditional wooden structures to brick and iron. He was known for staying in Tokyo to sketch modern developments as they happened.
Biography
Yasuji focused on kōsen-ga. This style used light and shadow in ways that traditional ukiyo-e did not. He used Western perspective to create depth.
