Franciscus Sansom

Franciscus Sansom was an engraver who specialised in translating complex drawings into printable copper plates. While many of his peers focused on portraiture, Sansom focused on botanical accuracy and architectural detail. His work on the 1787 monument for Cornelis Govert Visscher demonstrates a mastery of three-dimensional forms. This print captures the formal mourning styles of the late eighteenth century with technical precision.

Biography

His artistic approach favoured clarity over dramatic contrast. In botanical prints such as Phytolacca decandra, he used fine line work to define the structure of the plant. This method allowed for the later addition of hand-applied colour without obscuring the original engraving. He avoided heavy ink saturation, which kept the images light and readable for scientific study. Each print shows a disciplined use of hatching to create depth.

These prints appeal to modern collectors because of their minimalist quality and historical character. The clean lines and white space make them suitable for modern wall displays. They represent a period when art and science were closely linked. His prints of flora and monuments provide a calm, academic atmosphere for domestic spaces.
