Benjamin Arlaud

Benjamin Arlaud moved from Geneva to London at a time when the English court sought refined European aesthetics. While his brother Jacques-Antoine Arlaud gained fame in Paris, Benjamin established himself by painting the House of Hanover. He captured George II of Great Britain during the king's early years as Prince of Wales. These small portraits were often carried as personal mementos or set into jewellery.

Biography

The artist worked primarily as a miniaturist. His technique involved applying watercolour to vellum with small, controlled strokes. This method allowed for a level of detail that larger oil paintings lacked. In his portrait of Caroline of Ansbach, Arlaud focused on the clarity of the sitter's features and the textures of courtly dress. His style avoided the heavy shadows common in Baroque art. Instead, he used clear light to define the form of the face.

Modern collectors value Benjamin Arlaud for the precision of his small-scale works. These pieces offer a window into the private world of eighteenth-century royalty. His depictions of Sophia Dorothea and the young George II provide a sense of historical proximity. The modest size of these prints makes them suitable for gallery walls or small studies. They provide a quiet alternative to the large, formal portraits usually associated with the period.
