Andrea del Verrocchio and Leonardo da Vinci
Andrea del Verrocchio was a Florentine sculptor born in 1435. He developed slowly and spent much of his career occupied with goldsmith work and decorative tasks. His output included a bronze candelabrum for the Palazzo Vecchio, the sarcophagus of Giovanni and Piero de’ Medici, and the bronze statue of David. He also worked on the mausoleum of Cardinal Forteguerra and the Beheading of John the Baptist. His career concluded with the equestrian statue of Colleone.
Biography
Verrocchio operated a studio that functioned as a laboratory for technical experimentation. He accepted Leonardo da Vinci as a pupil after Ser Piero da Vinci presented his son's sketches. Verrocchio was a seeker who produced many pupils, including Lorenzo di Credi and potentially Perugino. His work is characterised by a sincerity that sought to introduce a living element to sculpture, often through complex draperies and chiaroscuro effects. He died in 1488 at the age of fifty-three.
