Alexander Browne
Alexander Browne was more than a printmaker; he was a teacher who influenced the domestic lives of the English elite. In the 1660s, he taught drawing to Elizabeth Pepys, the wife of the diarist Samuel Pepys. His manual, Ars Pictoria, published in 1669, provided instructions on etching and painting that reached many amateur artists. Browne is best known for his work in mezzotint, a technique that allows for tonal gradations rather than simple lines. He published numerous plates after portraits by Anthony van Dyck and Peter Lely. His prints of figures like King Charles I and Henrietta Maria capture the textures of fabric and skin through careful burnishing of the copper plate. This method allowed him to reproduce the effects of oil paintings with a precision that earlier woodcuts or engravings could not achieve.
