A detailed woodcut by Albrecht Dürer depicting the diplomatic negotiations for the Vienna Double Wedding between the Habsburg and Jagiellonian dynasties.
This woodcut depicts the diplomatic negotiations between Emperor Maximilian I and the Jagiellonian kings of Hungary and Bohemia. The composition focuses on the political arrangement of the double marriage, a strategy designed to secure the Habsburg succession in Central Europe. The figures are arranged in a formal line, draped in heavy, ornate robes that reflect the status of the royal participants.
Albrecht Dürer employs a precise, linear technique to define the textures of the garments, the crowns, and the architectural elements in the background. The scene is framed by a classical arch, which provides a sense of structure to the gathering. The inclusion of heraldic shields at the base of the composition reinforces the dynastic nature of the event. The figures appear in a shallow, stage-like space, typical of Dürer's graphic work from this period.
Each participant is rendered with individualised features, though the overall aesthetic remains consistent with the formal requirements of courtly portraiture. The dense hatching and cross-hatching techniques create depth within the clothing, while the background remains relatively sparse to keep the focus on the royal figures. This work provides a visual record of the complex alliances that defined the political climate of the early sixteenth century. It is a clear example of the artist's ability to translate political narrative into a graphic medium, using the woodcut format to disseminate images of power and diplomacy across the Holy Roman Empire.
