An early engraving by Albrecht Dürer depicting a dramatic encounter between a wild figure and a woman in contemporary 15th-century dress.
Albrecht Dürer produced this early engraving, often titled The Ravisher, during the mid-1490s. The composition depicts a wild, satyr-like figure seizing a woman who wears the contemporary dress of a Nuremberg burgher. The scene is set in a sparse outdoor environment, featuring a gnarled tree and a distant, small town silhouette. A large, empty scroll unfurls above the figures, a common device in Dürer's early work that remains curiously blank in this instance.
The technical execution demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the burin. He employs varied hatching patterns to define the musculature of the male figure and the folds of the woman's gown. The contrast between the rugged, unkempt appearance of the aggressor and the refined attire of the woman creates a tension that is characteristic of the artist's early explorations of human form and moral allegory. The woman's expression is one of alarm, while the male figure displays a frantic, almost bestial intensity.
This work belongs to a period when Dürer was experimenting with the expressive potential of the copper plate. By combining classical mythological tropes with the costume and setting of his own time, he bridges the gap between medieval narrative traditions and the humanistic concerns of the Renaissance. The empty banderole suggests that the print may have been intended for a specific context or perhaps left unfinished by the artist. As a specimen of early German printmaking, it offers a clear view into the development of Dürer's graphic language, showing his ability to render texture and anatomy with precision. The print remains a subject of study for those interested in the iconography of the period and the evolution of the artist's technical skill in the medium of engraving.
