A refined woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicting the courtesan Ariwara, capturing the grace and aesthetic style of the Edo period.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicts the courtesan Ariwara of the Tsuruya establishment. It belongs to the series A Collection of Modern Beauties, a body of work that captures the aesthetic ideals of the Edo period. Eishi, a former official in the shogunal court, transitioned to printmaking and brought a refined sensibility to the depiction of women. His figures are characterised by elongated proportions and a sense of poise that distinguishes his work from contemporaries.
The subject is shown in a seated posture, holding a long-stemmed pipe. Beside her sits a smoking chest, a common accessory in the pleasure quarters of the time. The composition is balanced, with the figure occupying the left side of the frame while the right side contains calligraphic text and a decorative floral motif. The artist employs a muted palette, relying on subtle variations of brown, cream, and soft greens to define the kimono and the surrounding space. The lines are precise, reflecting the technical skill required for high-quality ukiyo-e production.
Eishi was known for his ability to convey the status and grace of his subjects without resorting to excessive ornamentation. The print demonstrates his focus on the silhouette and the arrangement of fabric, which creates a sense of movement within a static pose. The inclusion of the smoking chest provides a narrative element, grounding the figure in the daily life of the Yoshiwara district. This work offers a view into the cultural practices of eighteenth-century Japan, where the image of the courtesan was a central subject for artists and a popular commodity for the urban public. The print remains a clear example of the stylistic shift toward more slender, elegant figures in the late eighteenth century.
