A detailed woodcut by Albrecht Dürer depicting the legend of Mary Magdalene being carried to heaven by angels.
This woodcut depicts the legend of Mary Magdalene, who, according to medieval tradition, spent thirty years in a cave in Provence as a hermit. Each day, she was carried into the air by angels to hear the celestial music of the spheres. Albrecht Dürer captures this moment of spiritual elevation with his characteristic precision in line work and anatomical observation.
The central figure of Mary Magdalene is shown with her long hair covering her body, a traditional iconographic convention. She is surrounded by a group of putti, or angels, who support her ascent. Dürer employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the volume of the figures and the textures of the landscape below. The background features a coastal scene with a small figure of a hermit, likely Saint Maximinus, observing the miracle from the shore. This detail provides a sense of scale and narrative context to the supernatural event.
Technically, the work demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the woodcut medium. The lines are clean and purposeful, allowing for a clear distinction between the foreground figures and the distant horizon. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the Magdalene and her angelic attendants contrasting against the horizontal expanse of the sea and the rocky terrain. The inclusion of Dürer's monogram at the bottom centre confirms the print's place within his body of graphic work. This piece reflects the period's interest in combining classical human form with Christian hagiography, a common theme in Dürer's output during the early sixteenth century. The print remains a clear example of the technical standards achieved in German printmaking during the Renaissance, showing how Dürer elevated the woodcut from a simple illustrative tool to a medium capable of complex narrative and tonal depth.
